WHAT IS SWAPDLE?

Swapdle is a word puzzle built around crossing words. Instead of typing guesses into an empty grid, you rearrange the letters already on the board. Because words intersect, moving one letter can affect more than the word you are currently examining. The challenge is to complete the whole crossword within the swap limit.

HOW TO SOLVE THE CROSSWORD

Click two letters or drag one onto another to swap their positions. After each move, check the colors and the number of swaps you have left. A useful swap should bring the grid closer to its solution, so look at the surrounding words before moving a letter.

Read the Four Colors

• Green: The letter is in the correct word and position.
• Orange: The letter belongs in this word but is in the wrong position.
• Purple: The letter belongs in a directly connected word.
• Gray: The letter belongs in a word that is not directly connected.

Purple and gray do not mean a letter is useless. They tell you to look beyond the word you are currently checking. In particular, gray does not simply mean “far away” on the grid.

Here is a simplified example of how to use the clues. Suppose a word needs to read CARE, but its letters currently read RACE. A and E are in the right positions, so they are green. R and C belong in the word but are misplaced, so they are orange. Swapping R and C makes CARE in one move.

On a full Swapdle board, check whether either tile sits where two words cross before making that swap. A move that fixes one word may also change another. Keep correctly placed letters in mind, and use purple and gray clues to narrow down where the remaining letters belong.

In Hard and Cruel, a misplaced letter at a position shared by two words has a color clue that applies to one of those connected words. Check both possibilities before committing a swap.
